Red light therapy (RLT) is one of the therapeutic techniques used by physical therapists to stimulate tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and provide pain relief. This type of treatment is also commonly referred to as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation (PBM).
Using a specialized device, red or near-infrared light is focused on the patient’s skin. The light’s wavelengths penetrate below the skin’s surface and are absorbed by the underlying cells. This stimulates a biochemical response in the cells and strengthens their mitochondria, also known as the energy powerhouses for cells.
